Updated Names ::

I added the 2 names to Mrs. Klapman's class that Sherry passed on (and, might I say, that Sherry must have been the poster girl for good posture!)

Buster Is Looking For Some Answers ::

Buster writes the occasional human interest article for the New York Times local newspaper and would like some input on some questions:

1. Which downtown stores had x-rays for your feet before you bought shoes and which stores had those tubes running to the central office so when you purchased an item the money was propelled and then your change came back to you in the same tube? (like the bank drive thru).

2. Where did your parents shop for food?

3. Where did your parents purchase your fall or spring wardrobe?

4. Where was the best hamburger? Hot dog?

5. What did your folks make you wear that you despised?

6. What was the scariest movie you saw?

7. When your family went out for a special occasion where would you go?

{Next questions are about grades 7-9)

8. Which teacher(s) had the meanest reputation?

9. How did Mrs. Duval strike fear in your heart?

10. What distinguished Ruby Dobinco Lindler Zimmerman from other teachers?

11. At what age were you allowed to go to movies and teen-age canteen and what were the rules concerning the opposite sex?

12 What Jr. High teachers made both good and bad impressions on you? Who were your favorites and why?

13. What unusual incidents do you recall having happened during school?

14. What was your most embarrassing moment?

I think that was all of the questions. Answer in comments and we'll try to keep the thread going.

the third grade class

On the third grade Klapman class the little girl near Lynn Willetts is named Kim something I think and the boy next to Wayne Ives is Billy Smith. Sherry

A Couple Of New Additions ::

Pam Parker (Hancock) sent one additional identification each to the Robinson and Team classes.

Pam, send me an e-mail to the address over on the right!

A Few Minor Updates ::

Jim Ring sent a few changes to some of the identifications and the pages have been updated. Remember to reload your browser.

3rd Grade Updates

Richard Reed sent some updates last night and I just amended the pages. When you go to the individual pages be sure and reload your browser so that you're not seeing a cached version of the page without the updates. I noticed this while working on the pages last night and I haven't had a chance to look at the code to see if I can modify it to automatically reload an updated page.

3rd Grade Class Update ::

OK, over on the right sidebar I've put up links to individual pages with what identifications I have. I think I got them all, but I may be wrong so if you see an (unknown) and know the name shoot me an e-mail and I'll update.

I really found this to be an interesting exercise even though I did not enter the Camden school system 'til the 6th grade. As I was putting the names to the faces a lot of memories fell into place. I would really like to see some of the later photographs since I have no yearbooks.

When I was in the navy, stationed in Alaska, my parents house burned to the ground and all of my high school memorabilia went up in flames.

Sadly, I remember some who are no longer with us, but I have been out of touch for so long I wonder just who has passed away that I don't know about.

Michael Christmas, of course.
John Anderson
Sue Stogner
Rock Montgomery (To this day I can picture the scene when I was told of his death)

Off the top of my head that's all I remember although I know of others from different classes. If you can update me please do, but don't use e-mail. Let's use comments and use this thread as some sort of remembrance!

New Life ::

My niece, Denise, delivered a healthy baby girl this morning-8lbs 15oz. This will be the first granddaughter for my brother, Bill, but he has 3 grandsons. I was hoping to come visit shortly after the birth, but I got grabbed by either a cold or a flu bug this morning and I'm certainly not going to subject a new mother and a newborn to the risk of a bug. I'm hoping to make the trip when I'm over this this and I'll post my plans before I leave. Maybe some of us can get together for coffee? I don't remember seeing a Starbucks in Camden yet, but I seem to remember a coffee shop on the main drag which may also have wi-fi.

I'm off to bed with the hopes that the cough and runny nose will be gone tomorrow!

The Names Are Rolling In ::

I'll try to put names to the images this weekend, but keep them coming. I am seeing names I have not thought of in years and years (or decades and decades).

A Note From Bob McCaskill

Growing up in Camden, I lived at the end of Chestnut - across from one of the Historic old Camden homes. I was one of those youth who walked to school - "up hill, in the snow, both ways." If I left at the right time in the morning, I could hitch a ride with a classmate - Johnny Rush. Johnny was also in the Camden High Band. He played trumpet with Jim Ring. Johnny's dad also had an automobile shop. Johnny drove an A Model Ford. Getting a ride in it was special in two ways. One I didn't have to walk and two - riding it was cool. If I didn't have band practice, track or other school activities, I walked home. At the corner of Mill Street and Chestnut was a home with a fenced in yard. When I approached it, two fantastic small white dogs would charge out of the back yard growling, barking and attacking with no small amount of self esteem. Being a hopeful veterinary student, I would show no fear. I would kneel down and offer them my hand. They would then turn into the sweetest little guys. I later learned that they were West Highland White Terriers.

In 1984, one of the professors wives at the United States Military Academy where I was stationed as the USMA Veterinarian brought in a Westie. Her daughter had rescued him from the Highland Falls, NY pound. Her daughter then married a cadet and they moved to Hawaii. Hawaii like many islands doesn't' t have rabies. They had in those days very stringent importation and quarantine requirements. The Westie stayed home. I told my client how I had always liked the breed. A couple of weeks later, she called and asked if I wanted him, to come to her quarters and pick him up. Clancy joined our family and became my wife (Cathy Montgomery McCaskill) dog. Clancy had many medical issues and we lost him while in Heidelberg, Germany. A year later we started on our Westie quest going to England to visit kennels. We purchased a new West Highland White Terrier puppy from a famous English Kennel. On our quest, Cathy and I met an English Lady named Sue Thomson. Sue later sold us a couple of Westies from her kennel. I purchased a male Westie named Ramsay Mac from Ashgate. He became a champion but because he was a male - it was difficult to manage a boy with our other girls. Ramsay Mac went to live with my mom and dad in Camden. He changed their life. No longer do the plan their week around the different doctors in Camden and Columbia. Now their day is build around Ramsay. Dad keeps a journal and mom has been know to have a 'come pet the dog' party or on occasion - come "puppy sit" when puppies come to town. Dad or mom can been seen daily walking Ramsay Mac near where we live.

As I write this, Westminster Kennel Club dog show is on the TV. Yesterday - a Westie Champion Bebe Queen of Trouble showed as one of the champions that were invited to the show. She didn't take the breed. She took Best of Opposite Sex. This is 2nd place. Of the ten champions invited to compete, she was one of three who will come home with a ribbon. Because the dog who won will retire after Westminster, maybe Bebe will move up to the top Westie spot in 2008. If this happens, I think that I will take dad to MSQ for the show.

Had I not lived in Camden and had I not had to walk to and from Camden High School, I may have not touch these great dogs who have made my families life special.

Bob

I must say that this brings back some long forgotten memories. I remember Bob's desire fore veterinary school as well as Johnny Rush's father's body shop and his love of the old cars.

[edit] I posted this in a hurry because I had to run out for a while, but, while driving up the road, I started wondering about the name. Bob references Johnny Rush, but I'm thinking Johnny Elliott. Am I wrong?

New Web Site ::

Fred Deaton Photography just went live late this afternoon. Much of the same has been up on another site which I am going to take in a different direction. If you visit let me know what you think. There are a few Camden, Columbia, and Rembert photographs up. I have more South Carolina photographs and I will be changing everything out on some sort of nebulous schedule.

Names To Faces Update ::

I've gotten several e-mails relating names to faces but it will probably be the weekend before I can wade through them. When I do this I will put each class up on its own page so don't go away and please continue to send any updates you may have.

Names To Faces ::

Bonnie sent some names to go with the photographs and I have added some caption information. Some I recognize and others I don't.

The way I have the 3rd grade photographs up is pretty awkward right now so I'll change them and put each up on their own page, but it will probably be this weekend before I can do that. I'm currently fighting an ear infection and my throat got scratchy this afternoon. In the meantime if you recognize anyone else in the photgraphs please let me know and we'll add the names.

[Thanks Bonnie, and, as an aside, I have never been called "Freddie" so much in the past 40 years!]

Photographs From The 3rd Grade ::

Richard Reed sent me these. I didn't start school in Camden until 6th grade so I doubt if I would recognize anyone here, but everyone else try. The link to higher resolution images is up on the right sidebar.

Somehow I remember Mrs. Klapman, who I presume is Brian's mother, and I remember Mrs. McLeod. When you recognize someone shoot me an e-mail and we'll add names to the photographs.

English Teachers At Camden High School In 1965 ::

A few days ago I made the comment that I do not remember many of the English teachers we had, other than Jerry Toms. A reader sent me this list after going through the 1965 yearbook:

Jerry Toms
Miss Brown
Mr. Caulder
Mrs. Childs
Mrs. Cox
Miss Craig
Mrs. Lindsay
Miss Ramseur

I remember Mr. Toms, obviously, as well as Mrs. Cox trying to make us understand how to diagram sentences. I wonder if that is still taught in school. Although I never had them I remember Mrs. Lindsay and Miss Ramseur (sister) who, as I recall, also coached the tennis team.

There is another English teacher mentioned by my e-mailer who, at his request, shall remain anonymous: Sylvia Livingston. Here is his comment:

oh yeah, to a seventeen year old male high school senior whose hormones were just then kicking into high gear, the very lovely Sylvia Livingston. 1964-1965 was, I think, her second year of teaching after college graduation. I didn't learn much English in her class but sure did drool a lot. SHE WAS HOT!

I don't remember Sylvia Livingston, but I wish I had a yearbook to refresh my memory. I well remember those raging hormones and young teachers were convenient triggers so our anonymous e-mailer can certainly be forgiven!

If you have any rememberances of these teachers please e-mail them to me and I will post them up here!

The Old Westerns ::

The Saturday morning westerns were a staple when I was a kid. Who can forget Fury, Rin Tin Tin, or The Cisco Kid. Impolitic has a great post reviewing some of the shows from the past. Read it if you can, but, if not, at least watch the video below for a bit of nostalia!

Teachers We Have Known ::

Somewhere in the e-mails regarding the memorial to Michael and its dedication a reference was made to Mrs. Zimmerman. This may have come from Buster, but I'm not sure. I have vague memories of Mrs. Zimmerman, but, as I recall, Mr. Zimmerman taught a shop class that I took and I still use some of his mathematical functions in regards to home projects to this day. I posted a bit earlier about Jerry Tom's English class, but I really don't remember the names of any of the other English teachers and I would love to have my memory refreshed.

In the meantime, who remembers Mrs. Schreiber's French class? As I recall I took 3 years with her along with at least 1 more year at Clemson. Ironically, after these years of studying French, I was stationed and lived in Spain for several years. One of my fellow students, I can't remember who, had the uncanny ability of sleeping through Mrs. Schreiber's French class with his eyes open.

I was discharged from the US Navy in Spain and stayed for a period of time. To this day it is the one country I have visited where I would consider moving to! If you have a vacation coming up I highly recommend a week spent in Seville during Holy Week. The Easter celebration goes on 24 hours/day!
